Preserving biodiversity starts in your own backyard. Rethink your lawn care routine by understanding the right time and way to mow your lawn.
The Ideal Time for Mowing
Lawn care is more than random mowing. The growth of your lawn is tied to temperature patterns – it consistently grows when the temperature hits around 8 degrees. Typically, the first mow after winter is just around the corner in March. Remember to mow when the grass is dry, which is usually late morning or early afternoon on a dry day.
Moon Phases and Mowing
You read it right. The best time for mowing your lawn isn't only about the weather. Mowing during the descending moon and on a leaf day benefits your lawn.
First Mow Guidelines
The first mow of the season requires careful measures. The grass height should be around 8-10cm. Keep the initial mow high, about 6cm. You can gradually decrease the height with subsequent mows. Also, don't toss those grass clippings, you can utilize them for mulching or adding nitrogen to your compost.
If you've seeded a new lawn, wait for about 3-4 weeks for the first mow. The grass should be approximately 10cm in height by then.
Prepping Up
Before you gear up for mowing, check the state of your lawnmowing tools. A quick check-up before starting the work can prevent potential issues.
Mowing Etiquettes
Lastly, be a good neighbor. Yes, mowing has etiquettes too. Local laws often specify acceptable lawn mowing hours. On weekdays, stick to between 8:30-12:00 and 14:00-19:30. Saturdays have a little different schedule – 9:00-12:00 and 15:00-18:00. On Sundays and public holidays, mowing is acceptable between 10:00-12:00. Respecting these hours ensures you maintain your neighbors' peace.
