Isn't this an interesting switch, only one game for the Fillmore Central girls last week. And that would be a win for the gals at Lewiston-Altura, 50-9.
Tayah Barnes scores on a long shot from well beyond the arc during the Falcons’ game at Mabel-Canton. The Falcons secured the win, 53-38. LINDSAY BARNES/BLUFF COUNTRY NEWSPAPERS
The win over the Cardinals gives the Lady Falcons a 7-11 record in the Three Rivers Conference, and 11-12, overall. Fillmore Central led 20-9 at the end of the first half and then shutout the Cards, 30-0, in the second half. The gals have now won three games in a row.
Leading the scoring was Sammi Bakke. Bakke hit seven of 12 field goals and was two-for-seven at the free throw line, for a total of 17 points. One of her field goals was a three-pointer. Also in double-figures was Leah Scheevel. Scheevel had two field goals and a very fine seven of 10 at the charity line. A pair of freshman, Kendyl Bennett and Tayah Barnes, each had six points. Barnes was two-for-three from beyond the arc. Kaitlynn Aug and Kenzie Broadwater each had four points. Broadwater was two-for-four from the field and Aug hit two of two at the free throw line. Megan Hendrickson rounded out the scoring for FC, making her only field goal attempt.
It was a good shooting night, all around, for the Falcons: 42.9 percent from the field (18/42), 60.0 percent from three-point range (3/5) and 78.6 percent at the free throw line (11/14).
Broadwater also had a good floor game, dishing out seven assists and coming up with two steals. Bakke had a team-high four steals. Aug was the team's rebound leader with four.
Fillmore Central only had 11 turnovers, one of the Falcons best performances of the season.
The team finishes the regular season this week with games Tuesday (Southland, home), Thursday (Houston, away) and Friday (Caledonia, away).
Sub-section 1A-East seeding will be done on Saturday, with sub-section play starting next week. The Falcons could easily be the No. 2 seed, and host a first round game next week. The tournament begins Tuesday, Feb. 25, for seeds seven through 10. The top six seeds host games on Thursday, Feb. 27. The tourney then moves to Mayo Civic Auditorium on Tuesday, March 4.
