She likes to trim and color them happy.
"I'm a very major people person. I like being able to be with people daily...and talking with them is huge," said Bren, new proprietor of Chatfield's salon, Shear Class.
"I love change and making someone feel good, making them feel important. When they leave happy, I'm happy," she added.
Bren, who attended the Rochester School of Hair Design and spent two years working at Locks, Taper, Scissors Salon in Stewartville, joined the salon's staff of cosmetologists in 2009 and recently purchased it from former owner Melissa Ploetz's family, as Ploetz is no longer able to operate the salon due to extenuating circumstances.
The 33-year-old business was begun in a home and moved to its current location approximately six or seven years ago. The salon's staff includes original owner Jean Easler, Lindsay Eide, Shelle Johnson, Darlene Johnson, Easler's daughter, Kendall, and Bren. Bren is proud to be the next owner.
"Shear Class has been around for more than 30 years itself, and I'm keeping the name because it's so established in the community," she said. "Everybody knows what and where it is. I've been here almost four years and a lot of it is the employees. They're like a family. We go to lunch together or at somebody's house together. We're all so close, we respect each other."
Shear Class's services include men's, women's and children's haircuts, hair coloring, waxing, pedicures and manicures, makeup and bridal or wedding updos. The business is also an Aveda Concept Salon, so it offers Aveda colors, which are all natural.
"I feel in a small community, there's a lot of opportunities for what the salon could be from what it has already been," Bren said. "I want to add a lot more services, like the manicures and pedicures, because there's so much more benefit to the area if people from Chatfield, Preston, Harmony, Stewartville and Rochester come here. There's an opportunity to expand because if there are more services, people don't have to drive to Rochester to get their nails done."
She added, "I'm very happy with what it is, but I still want to add services because I feel like it could be so much more. I want to expand, make it my own."
Bren enjoys being able to provide cosmetology services to the community, be it trimming a ragamuffin's hair for the first time or helping a bride get ready for her wedding.
"I like being able to come into a friendly environment every day and everyone's happy to be here because they're here to have their hair and nails done," she said. "Seeing that they're happy means that I'm a good business owner, a good salon owner and I like feeling that I'm accomplished when the staff and I leave. It wouldn't be a salon without the clientele, either - their trust in us is huge."
Bren lives in Chatfield with her husband, Dustin, and their 16-month-old daughter, Alaina, and the couple is expecting their second child in March.
She spends her free time with her family and enjoying the great outdoors, even though she occasionally likes to do her own hair and nails for nights on the town. "I am a major outdoors girl. I like hunting, fishing and riding horses, and of course, spending time with my family."
Shear Class is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call (507) 867-1674.
