David Ryan, 66, once of Harmony

David Marlin Ryan, 66, of Stewartville and once of Harmony, died on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, of an apparent heart attack at his home.
He was born on April 5, 1947, in Preston to Donald and Marie (Pederson) Ryan. He grew up on the family farm, attended area schools, graduating from Harmony High School in 1965. He entered the U.S. Army in 1966, serving one year overseas in Vietnam. Following his discharge in 1968, he lived in Winona for a few years.
He was married on June 14, 1974, in Brownsdale, Minn., to Barbara A. Darnell. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Stewartville, where they raised their kids and have continued to make their home.
He was employed as a metal refinisher at Crenlo Corporation in Rochester for over 30 years until his retirement in 2004. His wife has been employed as a nurse at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester for 24 years.
He was a longtime member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church and its Men's Club. He was a member of the United Auto Workers, the Stewartville American Legion and served on the Riverview Greens Townhome Association Board.
He was an outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed rendezvousing and camping and was a member of the Root River Rifleman Club. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and visiting with friends. He loved time spent with family and, following his retirement, was able to help with day care for his grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Barb; his daughter, Carrie (Andrew) Anderson of Stewartville and son, Joseph of Rochester; two grandchildren, Ashley and Jacob Anderson; two sisters, Carol (John) Lewis of Cresco and Joan (John) Broadwater of Winona; and a brother, John (Jacque) of Harmony and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Ryan Lewis.
The Memorial Mass was held on Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Stewartville with the Rev. John Wilmot officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date.
Arrangements were with Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville.
