Duane Shanks, 60, of Decorah, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at his home.

Duane Garland Shanks was born on Nov. 28, 1952, the son of Royce and June (Dohrmann) Shanks in Zumbrota. He graduated from Mabel-Canton High School and attended Winona Tech for one year. He served in the U.S. Army from 1972 to 1974.

He was united in marriage to Denise Frana on Jan. 14, 1978, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah.

He worked for 37 years at CamCar (Infastech) in Decorah, retiring last November for health reasons. Over the years, he enjoyed golfing and had two holes-in-one on #4 and #8 at Silvercrest. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and hunting trips with his brothers and the Brynsaas boys. He always enjoyed visiting and having a beer with all his friends, but above all he enjoyed his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Denise of Decorah; two children, Jeremiah (Stacy) Shanks of Ridgeway, Iowa, and Melissa Shanks of Decorah; two grandchildren, Nicole Panos and Tristan Shanks; two brothers, Mike (Cindy) Shanks of Canton and Daniel (Margo) Shanks of Canton; a sister-in-law, Lynell Shanks of Harmony; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dennis and Darlene Frana of Decorah; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Daryl (Sue) Frana of Decorah, Doreen (Jeff) Roney of Decorah, Donette (Bill) Trisler of Tulsa, Okla., Douglas Frana of Kendallville, Dean (Maria) Frana of Decorah and Dawn (Bob) Hawkins of Caledonia; along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Royce and June Shanks, and his brother, Steven Shanks on Oct. 27, 2010.

Memorial services were held last Saturday at the Henrytown Lutheran Church in rural Canton, with the Rev. Paul Thompson presiding. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Schluter - Balik Funeral Home in Decorah assisted the family with arrangements.
