Four of the seven Burros who saw the most playing time last season return to provide the 2013 Lanesboro volleyball team a core of experience.
Senior Amy Kelly moves from defensive specialist to rightside hitter (RH), while classmate Kaia Hongerholt is listed at the outside hitter (OH) position. Juniors Olivia Haug and Stephanie Erickson also have varsity experience. Haug is listed at RH, while Erickson reprises her role at setter.
Seniors Madison Ming and Regan Howerton also return to the court, with Ming playing OH and Howerton at middle hitter (MH). Other returning Burros who appeared on last season's sub-section roster include juniors Claire Peterson (OH), Alexis Jorgenson (MH), and Kelsey O'Koren (OH), sophomore Rachel Eversole (OH), and Freshman Cassidy Ruud (MH).
Athletes joining this year's the varsity/JV roster include junior Caitlin Good (OH), sophomores Rachel Kimball (OH), Madeline Snyder (OH), Olivia Rogers (MH), and Halle Scott (OH), and freshmen Lexi Melander (setter), Melissa Kalstabakken (OH), Alyssa Gathje (OH), Maggie Decker (OH), and Megan Rasmussen (OH).
Head coach Christine Knutson begins a new stint this year. She coached varsity volleyball in the '90s and took the helm at the junior high level in 2011. The program will be assisted by long-time volleyball coach Darla Taylor, as well as Dave Rogers and Lena Bergo.
"We look to be competitive in the subsection..." Knutson said. "We have a well-rounded team." The offensive potential of this year's squad is its strength, she added.
LHS finished with a record of 1-18-6 last year, gaining the No. 11 seed in sub-section play. The Burros went 1-12 in SEC contests. Knutson said that perennial SEC powerhouse Mabel-Canton will be a favorite in conference and section play in 2013.
