Lanesboro volleyball hits bumps in road

Two road trips resulted in a pair of losses last week for the Burro volleyball team.
Lanesboro (L) at Houston 15-25, 20-25, 10-25
Numerous lead changes marked the first set, but the Hurricanes pulled away after taking a 16-14 lead over Lanesboro and finished with 7 points in a row. The second set saw a Burros comeback from 19-3, out-scoring Houston 17-6 in the second half of play while coming up 5 points short. Set three was tied 9-9 before serving streaks of 6 and 10 points put the Hurricanes in the driver's seat.
LHS coach Bobbie Vickerman expressed some frustration following the match, noting that "...although the start was good and we had moments of triumph, we just could not pull it together. There was a lot of positive energy from the cancer fundraiser that the Burros participated in, but the positive energy did not move onto the court."
Senior outside hitter Sydney Johnson and junior OH Kaia Hongerholt contributed some tough defense, with Johnson providing 10 digs and 2 blocks and Hongerholt managing 9 digs. Senior Libero Megan Kiehne had 6 digs and added 2 ace serves. Sophomore setter Steph Erickson also had 2 aces, along with 2 assists. Senior setter Linnea Thiss had 7 assists and 6 digs. Junior rightside hitter Regan Howerton provided 3 blocks. Junior middle hitter Madison Ming had 6 blocks.
Where LHS had difficulty was finishing plays on offense, with just 9 successful kills recorded on team stats. Olivia Haug and Hongerholt had 2 kills each, as did Ming.
Lanesboro (L) at Grand Meadow 8-25, 15-25, 12-25
"The Burros struggled against Grand Meadow," Vickerman said. "In the first game one server had 11 points in a row. Passing was not a problem for the Burros, but the execution of the offense was, with numerous hitting errors the Burros could not get a run going."
The highlights for Lanesboro included some offensive sparks in set two, when the Burros pulled to 16-15 before Superlark serving ran out the frame on a single possession. The third set was also close at 11-10 before GM serving strings of 3, 4, and 5 points sealed the match.
Thiss provided 8 assists and 5 digs. Howerton had 4 kills and a block. Eighth-grader Cassidy Ruud, playing at middle hitter, had 3 kills and 4 blocks. Junior defensive specialist Amy Kelly had 4 digs. Hongerholt had 6 digs and 1 kill. Johnson had 1 kill 2 ace serves, and 5 digs.
For the Superlarks, senior Cortney Olson had 8 kills and 3 blocks, while junior Caitlyn Snyder had 7 kills. Senior Ashley Crumb scored 5 ace serves.
The Burros were scheduled to host state-ranked Mabel-Canton on Oct. 9. On tThursday, the team will travel to Spring Grove. The final regular season match will be Tuesday, Oct. 16, when Lanesboro travels to Leroy-Ostrander. The subsection tourney kicks off on Monday, Oct. 22.
