Mabel City Council evaluates flood damages
City maintenance director rescinds resignation

"We are more than happy to keep ya," said Mayor Brian Street at the July 10 Mabel City Council meeting.
The discussion came immediately following an announcement by city maintenance director Bob Mierau, that he would like to continue working for the city of Mabel. He explained he came to the decision after a trial basis of working part-time for the city of Caledonia.
"If you want me to stay, I would be happy to stay." He added, "I enjoy the variety of all the utilities at Mabel and at Caledonia, it would be strictly one. I just didn't think it (city of Caledonia) was a good fit for me."
Mireau has been employed by the city for more than 15 years as the city maintenance director.
Flood damage evaluated
Representatives from the offices of Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Sen. Al Franken, Rep. Tim Waltz, Sen. Jeremy Miller himself and Homeland Security and FEMA representatives came to Mabel on Wednesday, July 10, to look at the flood-affected areas and to evaluate damages.
City Clerk Karen Larson and Mireau have assessed damages to the public sector at approximately $90,000 to $100,000.
The city of Mabel is waiting to hear if FEMA will declare a disaster in which FEMA will fund up to 75 percent of the qualified expenses; the city would be reimbursed 75 percent to restore what is damaged.
Mediacom franchise renewal
Larson reported to the council that she received notification from Mediacom regarding the city's renewal agreement. Mediacom is Mabel's current cable provider.
After reviewing the agreement, Larson discovered that the current agreement is not up for renewal until April 2016. After questioning a representative, Larson was informed that federal law requires notification 30 to 36 months prior to intent to renew the franchise. Council has requested that a Mediacom representative attend the August council meeting to explain the terms of the renewal agreement.
Appraisal for Amdahl property
A $4,300 appraisal was given to the Lyle Amdahl, Jr., property adjacent to the community center that Amdahl is donating to the city to be used for a parking lot for the community center. Amdahl's attorney will be drafting his purchase agreement to his terms and conditions of the property.
Cherrywood drive improvements
Carl Westby and Wendell Peterson were present at the meeting to ask the council about an update on the Cherrywood Drive project.
Larson reported to the council that an annexation agreement has been found. The next step is to record the agreement.
Once the agreement is recorded, city attorney Dick Nethercut will be sending the landowners a letter to request easement rights be signed over to the city.
Twins Fields for Kids Grant
The city of Mabel received a grant from the Minnesota Twins Community Fund in the amount of $10,000 with the agreement that the city match the grant and that the grant money be used within 12 months.
The Twins Fields for Kids Grant is made available for the renovation or construction of baseball and/or softball fields used primarily by youth.
Eligible renovation projects include the upgrading of essential field components, such as new sod, infield, fencing and dugouts.
Kati Tweeten and Bobbi Vickerman are heading up the project and will be continuing to seek donations to match the $10,000 that was given.
Steam Engine Park
The flooding that occurred in June had a significant impact on the Steam Engine Park. The council discussed moving the ball diamond, playground and picnic shelters so future flooding would not have such an impact on them.
The current picnic tables need to be replaced as they were completely submerged for an extended period of time during the recent flooding.
Clean up day for the Steam Engine Park has been set up for Saturday, July 20, at 8 a.m. Any one that is able to help with cleanup would be appreciated. The city will provide rakes, tools and gloves for those who may not have them.
Bob Mireau has contacted Donna Rasmussen, Fillmore County Water Planning coordinator, to discuss perhaps arranging an informative meeting for the city of Mabel, local townships and concerned citizens to discuss the watershed issues in Fillmore County, specifically the Mabel area.
Sewer project update
Mireau gave an update on the sewer project. "In visiting with the engineer, he has 11 contractors that have requested plans and they have also sent it out to numerous magazines and publications. It is well publicized and there is interest," stated Mireau.
Larson added that the bid opening on he project will be held on July 24. Council members set a special meeting to discuss bids with engineers on Wednesday, July 24, at 6:30 p.m.
In other business, the council handled the following issues.
At least nine individuals have come forward to answer the call for the need of EMTs and first responders. "We have had a positive response," stated council member Kirsten Wyffels.
The council nominated and approved Karen Larson, city clerk, to be appointed as the designated authorized representative for the police department and prosecuting attorney to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
The council approved a fireworks application for the Mabel Business Association for a fireworks display on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 9 p.m.
Chuck and Darlene Dahl have donated a flagpole to the city of Mabel. Council discussed designating plaques on the wall for donations that are given to the community center.
Council approved a motion to have sun control shades installed in the community center offices.
