The Mabel-Canton girls' basketball team brought home two wins last week, securing a win at home against the Lanesboro Burros on Thursday evening, 57-48, and defeating the LeRoy-Ostrander Cardinals on their home court, 58-45, the following night.

Mabel-Canton vs. Lanesboro

On Thursday, Feb. 6, the Cougars defeated the Burros 57-48.

For Mabel-Canton, it was a hard-fought, close contest. Lanesboro tied the score three times, then took a brief, 21-20, lead late in the first half. But M-C got the next 10 points and the contest became a series of runs. Lanesboro pulled back to within three points in the second half (36-39), but M-C answered with 11 straight points, mostly while Lanesboro junior center Olivia Haug sat out in foul trouble.

A 10-3 Burro rally late in the game wasn't enough to close the gap.

Mabel-Canton got 10 chances to sink free throws, hitting six. But Lanesboro went to the line 19 times, scoring 11 points. Most of those came during a rally early in the second half.

Four Cougars finished in double figures. Lydia Geving led with 16 points (including two of three baskets from beyond the arc), four steals, three assists and four rebounds.

Sara Lind added 14 points, four rebounds, two blocked shots and an assist.

Hannah Nolte had 12 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Carly McCabe scored 10 points, secured 10 rebounds for the double double, passed for five assists and snagged four steals.

Coranda Vickerman hit for five points, pulled down seven rebounds, dished out a team-high six assists with only one turnover and lifted two steals.

Abby Hanson had five boards, an assist and a steal.

Connor Benson also came in, providing a defensive board and a steal.

Lanesboro coach Kelly McMillen praised the Cougars for a well-played, tough game.

"It's no wonder their record is the way it is," he said. "This was a battle for us and we hung in there despite getting into foul trouble."

Haug finished with another in a long series of double doubles, getting 15 points and 15 boards. She also dished for three assists and grabbed two steals. Heather Boyum scored nine points and added four rebounds, three assists and a steal. Haley Polin netted seven points.

Mabel-Canton at LeRoy-Ostrander

The Cougars took a road trip the following night, defeating the Cardinals at LeRoy-Ostrander, 58-45.

Mabel-Canton hit a higher percentage of shots from three-point territory (17-15 percent), two-point range (43-31 percent), and the charity stripe (71-50 percent). The difference in free throws alone favored the Cougars by six points.

The turnover tussle was close, with L-O losing possession 11 times, and M-C on 14 occasions. But the Cougars also passed well, helping shooters find the open look. M-C totaled 13 assists to seven for the Cardinals.

Rebounds favored M-C, 45-38. That helped the Cougars get 21 shots from the field compared to 17 for their hosts.

Geving tied for high-scorer with 20 points. She also added nine rebounds, five assists and three steals to team totals.
