Mabel-Canton's boys' basketball team suffered two setbacks last week to SEC opponents.
Mabel-Canton versus Lanesboro
The Cougars hosted Lanesboro on Tuesday, Jan. 22, falling by a score of 68-54. The Burros led 45-28 at the half, and hung on in spite of being out-scored in the second period.
Lanesboro out-rebounded the Cougars 29-22, and continued their tradition of giving opponents a clinic in outside shooting. The Burros hit a solid 42 percent from beyond the arc as a team. Free throw shooting favored M-C, with the Cougars hitting 11 of 15 (73 percent) while LHS only netted 46 percent (6 of 13) from the line. Turnovers were even at 13 per team.
Noah Manning led M-C scorers with 17 points, with Justin Ward adding 13. Hunter Johnson hit for 9, Keyser Wenthold 7, Donnie Lind 4, Mac Nelson 2 and Collin O'Bieglo 2.
Wenthold came off the bench to lead M-C in rebounding, with 7. O'Bieglo added 4, while Manning snagged 3. Johnson, Ward and Nelson each had 2 rebounds. Wenthold was also credited with 4 assists and only 3 turnovers. Ward had 2 steals, while Manning and Wenthold had one each.
Kole Ruud led Burro scorers with 23 points. He also had a steal and 2 rebounds, while passing for 6 assists. Luke Rogers led the team in rebounds with 11. He completed a double-double by scoring 21 points, including an excellent 55 percent from three point range. Those six treys combined with 4 apiece from Ruud and Peterson for 14 threes overall.
Mabel-Canton at Glenville-Emmons
On Friday, Mabel-Canton traveled to Glenville-Emmons. The Wolverines defeated the Cougars, 62-48.
M-C again outscored their opponent in the second period, but couldn't make up for a first half deficit. Mixing up their offensive attack, the Wolverines managed 7-0 and 10-0 runs during the first 18 minutes, scoring on drives to the bucket, three-point bombs and 2-pointers from the post. They enjoyed a 17 point advantage as they went to the locker room. M-C chipped away in the second half, using an 11 point run to cut the lead to 10, but came no closer than that to the home team.
Mabel-Canton hit just 2 of 16 from beyond the arc, while the Wolverines connected on 50 percent (6 of 12) of their trey attempts. The other advantage that G-E found was at the foul line, where they out-scored M-C 63 percent (12 of 19) to 31 percent (6 of 19).
Ward had 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Johnson added 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. Wenthold had 8 points, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Lind chimed in for 5 points, 5 rebounds, and an excellent 5 blocked shots. O'Bieglo scored 4, blocked a shot, and took a charge. Manning and Nelson had 2 points apiece. Manning grabbed 8 rebounds.
Derek Olson led the Wolverines with 25 points (including six treys) and 3 assists. Andrew Eversole had a balanced double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
The Cougars were to host Fillmore Central on Monday Jan. 28, but the game was re-scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 31, due to icy road conditions. On Friday, Feb. 1, M-C is scheduled to host a doubleheader with Grand Meadow. Another Monday match is on for Feb. 4, when a make-up game with Rushford-Peterson is set to occur at Mabel.
