The Harmony Area Community Foundation has funded over $47,000 in community projects since it was started in the fall of 2012. Included in those grants are projects within the community and local school district.
Most recently, foundation chair Vicky Tribon explained, the foundation granted $15,000 to Fillmore Central to purchase an electronic sign as well as $6,000 to the Fillmore Central preschool for student scholarships.
Tribon also noted that over $6,100 was raised for the sign project during the foundations first “Swing into Spring” fundraiser in April. The event provided an opportunity for the foundation to not only celebrate its past accomplishments, but also served as a way to raise funds to support the sign project.
The electronic sign replaces a 28-year-old display sign which needed to be manually changed to display upcoming school activities.
Tribon said the new sign is located in the front lawn of the high school and the display will promote not only school events, but community events as well.
The foundation also provided $2,000 to the Harmony Chamber of Commerce for the children’s carnival on July 5 in Selvig Park and $2,200 to the Harmony Area Historical Society to paint and carpet the meeting room.
Past grants supported the Selvig Park playground improvements, Fillmore Central laptop computer initiative, the Fillmore Central music department’s Monster Bash and basketball court upgrades at the community center.
In the near future, Harmony residents will be receiving a letter from the foundation, highlighting some of these programs and thanking the community for its past support.
The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) is offering a $5,000 first-come, first-serve competitive endowment fund match between all the SMIF community foundations.
The Harmony Area Community Foundation is eligible for the four-to-one match, which means the local foundation need to raise $20,000 to receive the full SMIF $5000 match.
The foundation board members remind local residents that it is still possible to become a Founders Club member by donating $1,000 or by pledging $100 a year for 10 years.
One can donate to the foundation at any time by mailing a check payable to the Harmony Area Community Foundation to P.O. Box 342, Harmony, MN, 55939, or one can also drop a check off to the foundation treasurer, Steve Donney, at 17 Center Street East in Harmony.
