After weeks of postponements, both the Caledonia/Spring Grove and Fillmore Central/Lanesboro baseball teams finally got to play ball. In the season opener for both squads, FC/L defeated C/SG 8-4 in a conference contest played April 24.

The second game of the long-delayed season was also played in Caledonia on April 26. In a pitching duel, Wabasha-Kellogg defeated the home team, 1-0.

FC/L 8, C/SG 4

FC/L 020 060 0 - 8 8 2

CS/G 030 100 0 - 4 7 1

"The difference in the game was one inning," C/SG coach Dave Konz reported. "It was a combination of walks, hits and mental errors that resulted in giving up a six-run inning."

For FC/L, 6 of their 8 hits came in that fifth-inning flurry.

Nicholas Ebner earned the pitching win by allowing only two C/SG base runners during the final three innings. The senior hurler struck out 7 and walked only 3.

Blaine Storlie (6K, 9W) absorbed the pitching loss but batted 2 for 4 with 3 RBI (runs batted in) including the game's only extra-base hit - a two-run double as C/SG rallied from two runs down to lead 3-2 in the second.

A bunt single by Storlie sent Kyle Sorenson (who had walked) home for a 4-2 lead in the fourth.

The visitors had taken an early 2-0 lead despite leaving the bases loaded in each of the first two innings.

Six C/SG batters hit safely with singles from Tanner Langen, Joe Pettit, Harrison Speltz, TJ Schultz and Mason DeMorett.

Sophomore Kai Lidstrom fanned 3 and walked none in 3 innings of relief for C/SG.

FC/L only out-hit C/SG 8 to 7 but benefited from 9 walks. All 8 FC/L hits were singles. Dan Gatzke hit 2 for 3 with 2 RBI; Nick Powell went 2 for 4.

C/SG had won all six previous games versus FC/L since SG and Caledonia combined in 2010. The C/SG starting lineup included two seniors, two juniors and five sophomores.

Both teams had only one hit going into the final inning. That's when the Falcons scored the game's only run with a double from Ben Glomski (2 for 2) and a two-out RBI single from Jethro Roemer.

Senior Will Greenheck, already a two-time all-conference performer, tossed the complete-game one hitter for W-K striking out 8 and walking none. Only four pitches were hit to the outfield.

Storlie was the only base runner for C/SG, being hit with a pitch in the first inning and hitting a two-out double down the right field line in the sixth. He reached third base after a rundown, but the threat ended with a line drive to second base.

In his first varsity start, C/SG sophomore Kyle Sorenson allowed only one hit while striking out 4 and walking 2 during five solid innings of pitching.

The pitching loss went to Kai Lindstrom who threw two innings in relief. He was touched for 2 hits while fanning 4 and walking none.

Despite each team being outside for only a few days, there was solid fielding with only one error during the game.

Originally scheduled at Wabasha, the game was moved to Caledonia due to wet field conditions at the Falcons' home diamond. Game time conditions were dry and warm with very brisk winds.

C/SG dropped to 0-2 (0-2 TRC) while the Falcons remained undefeated at 4-0 (3-0 TRC). C/SG still leads the series 4 wins to 3 during the four seasons Spring Grove & Caledonia have been combined.
