The Caledonia/Houston/Spring Grove girls soccer team earned two big wins last week, defeating Winona Cotter 5-1 on Tuesday, Aug. 28 and Saint Charles 2-0 on Thursday.
The Warriors quickly scored their first goal of the season versus the Ramblers, when sophomore forward Ali Beardmore scored two minutes after the opening whistle with an assist from Rachel Mills.
"It was an up-and-down-the-field battle from there," coach Tom Krinke reported. Cotter had several good chances late in the first period, hitting two pipes and finally scoring three minutes before halftime.
That goal, by senior Karen Kersting, turned out to be the only Rambler score of the night.
"We got reorganized at halftime and came out firing to start the second half," Krinke said. "We scored at the two, three and five minute marks. Our final goal was 12 minutes into the half."
Sophomore forward Trece Frank got the second C/H/SG goal (assist Mills), followed quickly by scores from Beardmore (assist Frank) and senior midfielder Mills (assist Frank). Sophomore midfielder Samantha Colleran notched the final goal with an assist from Hannah Russert.
Warrior goaltender Katie Meyer, a senior, had 15 saves while Cotter's Jo Beyer had 10.
Besides the scorers, Krinke singled out Spring Grove student Haley Halverson as one of the stars of the match. Playing at sweeper, Halverson was on the field from start to finish, he said.
Beardmore scored both goals in Thursday's match versus the Saints. The first came seven minutes into the second half with an assist from Colleran. Frank assisted her with the second score, which came with nine minutes left to play.
Krinke singled out senior defender Carlie Krueger for doing a "great job of stopping their attack." Colleran, in center-midfield, was also outstanding "controlling the field." Lastly, Beardmore deserves credit for putting the ball away against "a tough defense," he noted.
On Thursday, Sept. 6, C/H/SG will travel to Dover-Eyota. Another road match is scheduled two days later, at Byron. On Sept. 10, La Crescent will visit the Warriors.
