After four postponements, the Spring Grove/Caledonia girls finally hit the softball field on April 20, traveling to the Onalaska Luther Tournament where they won the opener before dropping their final two games by narrow margins.

SG/C vs. Shoreland Lutheran

SG/C won the first game versus Shoreland Lutheran (Somers, WI), 5-1. Samantha Bratland pitched the season opener, striking out 4 batters while giving up only one base on balls. Lottie Augedahl played catcher.

Leading hitters for SG/C were Bratland with a double and singles from Lauren Rusert, Alexy Bearbower and Angie Augedahl. Angie wound up with three runs batted in.

SG/C vs. La Crosse Aquinas

Game two featured La Crosse Aquinas. SG/C came up short in the contest, 8-7.

Sophia Augedahl pitched for SG/C, giving up 13 hits, 2 walks. Lottie Augedahl caught.

Bratland doubled as did Sophia Augedahl. Lottie Augedahl belted three singles, going three for four. Angie Augedahl (2 RBIs), Marie Doering and Taylor Augedahl also singled.

"A couple of costly errors, along with some timely Aquinas hits in the bottom of the 7th, proved the difference in this game," coach Michelle Anderson reported.

SG/C vs. Onalaska Luther

Game three was a pitchers' duel versus the host school. Onalaska Luther won the match-up 2-0, scoring one run in the fifth on a hit and an error and adding another in the sixth when the Lady Knights managed to bunch two extra-base hits together.

Pitchers Bratland (SG/C) and Mariah Schultz (OL) each struck out 11 batters. Bratland walked no batters and only allowed 3 hits. Schultz walked 2, hit 1 batter and allowed 2 hits.

Doering and Bearbower singled for SG/C. OL won the tourney, improving to 6-0 on the year.

This week's action

The girls play their first-ever Three Rivers Conference game at Caledonia on Thursday, April 25, versus perennial powerhouse St. Charles. The next day, they travel to Wabasha-Kellogg.

The road swing continues on April 29 with a double header at Spring Valley against GMLOK (Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland) and a Tuesday non-conference trip to La Crescent.

For the first time, SG/C plays in the Three Rivers Conference with double headers versus the other five South Division members: Chatfield, GMLOK, Fillmore Central/Lanesboro, Southland and Rushford-Peterson.

Also counting in the South standings are crossover contests with five North Division squads: Wabasha-Kellogg, St. Charles, Dover-Eyota, Lewiston-Altura and Plainview-Elgin-Millville (P-E-M).
