Mensink wins Hornets feature,
Kiehne tops Mod Lites points race

Scattered thunderstorms failed to stop Upper Iowa Speedway drivers from springing into action last weekend, as five classes competed in the weekly points race on June 15.
The 600 Mod Lites were back after a two-week hiatus with David Benke of Winona taking the checkered flag in the feature. Todd Kiehne of Harmony was second while Bob Cisewski of Winona snagged third.
Caledonia native John Griffin was fourth. Fifth went to Curt Luhman of Rushford followed by New Hampton (Iowa) drivers Cole and Chris Denner (in that order.) Christopher Eide of Peterson was ninth. Harmony's Corey Whalen finished 14th.
In Four Cylinder Hornets action, Jay Mensink of Harmony won the day again, scoring 100 points in the feature. Paul Seabrooke of Elgin was right behind followed by Luke Onstad of Spring Grove. Ryan Ayers of Decorah, Iowa, was fourth and John Lejeune of La Crosse, Wis., fifth. David Lenz of Harmony took eighth with ninth going to Breanna Lee of Mabel.
The Hobby Stocks crown went to Nate Lerch of West Union, Iowa. Joshua Ludeking of Decorah was second and fellow hometown driver Steve Larson third. Cresco (Iowa) natives Steve Holthaus and Scott Spilde took fourth and fifth, respectively. Justin Bigler of Dorchester, Iowa, was eighth.
B-Mods were once again the most numerous class with 19 cars running in the finale. Dan Hovden of Decorah kept the inside track winning the feature by maintaining the lead from pole to pole.
Jon VanMinsel of Spring Grove started the feature in ninth, but had closed into second place by the end of the race. He was followed by Matt Jones of Waukon, Iowa, Junior Boyer of Calmer, Iowa, and Troy Hovey of Decorah. Brian Mahlstedt of Ionia, Iowa, was sixth, followed by Taylor Knutson of Caledonia. Cole Konkel, also of Caledonia, was 12th. Spring Grove driver Casey Knutson finished 14th.
The big Stock Cars class was won by Dillon Anderson of Rudd, Iowa. Spring Grove's Pete Solum was right behind adding 95 points to his season total. Mitch Hovden of Decorah started in 10th and worked his way up to third.
Tom Schmitt of Independence, Iowa, took fourth followed by Dan Jones, the popular Waterville (Iowa) driver. Caledonia natives Jordan Becker and Jake Lampert took 12th and 13th, respectively.
On the leader board, Kiehne remains at the head of the pack in Mod Lites with 281 season points followed by Luhmann (268) and Cole Denner (259). John Griffin is fourth at 246 while Chris Denner is fifth with 231.
Hornets are led by Seabrooke (380), LeJeune (371), Mensink (354), Onstad (349) and Ayers (339).
Hobby Stocks have Cline and Larson tied for the lead with 368 points each. Ludeking stands at 357 followed by Holthaus (353) and Spilde (347). Chad Olson of Harmony is in 11th at 217, and Lanesboro's Adam Sveen is in 12th (208).
B-Mods are led by Hovey (375) and Hovden (356). Jeremy Schaufenbuel of New Hampton is third with 336 points. Kyle Anderson of Decorah stands at 327. VanMinsel is fifth with 296. Konkel is in eighth at 272.
Stocks are led by Anderson (361), Jones (332), Danny Cole Jr. of Lansing (315), Dettmann (304) and Hovden (275). Solum is eighth with 253 points.
Weather permitting, the weekly point races will resume this Saturday night, June 22, with hot laps at 6 p.m. and racing at 6:30 at the semi-banked quarter-mile clay oval track in Decorah.
