Lavern A. Schmidt, 88, of Spring Valley, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

She was born on August 19, 1925, on the family farm in Forestville Township, the daughter of Emil and Minnie (Lemke) Schulz. She was baptized and confirmed at Midway Church by the Rev. Eisenberg. She attended Gilbert school in rural Spring Valley. Following school she lived at home and helped her parents.

On May 24, 1946, she married Melvin Schmidt at Zion Lutheran Church in Spring Valley. Following their marriage, the couple lived on the home farm. In 1950 they purchased their farm in Forestville Township and lived there until 2004 when they moved to a new home in Spring Valley. Mrs. Schmidt worked as a homemaker. LaVern and Melvin were charter members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She loved gardening, traveling, camping, going south for the winter and dancing. She especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved reading and studying her Bible.

She is survived by her husband Melvin; two sons, Roger (Joan) of St. Paul and Steve (Julie) of Rosemount; five grandchildren, Tory, Brandi, Dustin, Jaeson and Geoffrey; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Kermit Schulz; also several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Lyle Schulz.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, Oct. 9) at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with the Revs. Dennis Timmerman and Laura Fladten officiating. Burial in the Spring Valley Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley and also one hour prior to services. Arrangements were with Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley.
