Time for Fluffy the Iguana to get his cute on.

"We're holding our cute pet contest on Tuesday, Aug. 13, and the contest is for any kind of animal - not just dogs and cats. We haven't had an iguana or other animal like that before, but we welcome them," said Spring Valley Senior Living (SVSL) Cute Pet Contest organizer Amanda Todd.

Todd is anticipating the arrival of all species of cute critters Tuesday at Spring Valley Senior Living's doorstep for friendly competition in determining whose bewhiskered or scaled mug is the most attractive. This is the first event of Ag Days 2013. The Tribune will have a special guide to the celebration next week, but the pet contest will take place before the special edition is published.

Before the competition begins, there's time for pet owners to have their best friends' portraits taken. Kristy McNamara will be taking portraits of pets at 6 p.m. before the contest begins for a fee of $5.

Also, the dietary department will be selling root beer floats during the contest, which will take about half an hour, depending on how many participate.

The residents are going to be outside, and there'll be resident judges - one from the skilled nursing, one from the assisted living and one from the Evergreens. There will be prizes for first, second and third place, and any participants' owners get free root beer floats.

Todd related that the contest is a good way for the community to connect with SVSL residents. "It's always fun to see who shows up for the pet portraits, and the residents enjoy it - they get a kick out of seeing the animals and having visitors."

The Spring Valley Senior Living Cute Pet Contest is slated for Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 6:30 p.m. outside the nursing home entrance at SVSL. The contest will be canceled in case of rain. For more information, call Todd at 346-1247.
