FFA team advances to state in dairy
foods; members attend Greenhand Camp

Spring Valley-Wykoff FFA recently participated in regional contests for poultry and dairy foods, which qualified for state competition with its performance, and attended a Greenhand Camp.
Thursday Dec. 5, the Spring Valley- Wykoff FFA dairy foods team and poultry team visited Kenyon-Wanamingo High School to participate in contests.
The dairy foods team was tested on different kinds of cheeses and off flavors of milk. In addition, the team had to perform the mastitis test and examine milker parts.
The dairy foods team placed second at regions and is going to state in April. Taylor Link placed fourth individually, Melinda Woods took sixth and Shelby Erding took seventh place.
The poultry team takes a written test on the poultry industry, grades carcasses, candles eggs, and also identifies parts of chickens. The local team took ninth place at regions.
The weekend of Dec. 6 through 8, members of the Spring Valley-Wykoff FFA attended Region VIII Greenhand Camp at Good Earth Village between Spring Valley and Wykoff.
There were 50 members in attendance from 15 different schools in the region. FFA members attended sessions including goal setting, community service, CDE's, SAE's, team building, and professional leadership.
Valerie Earley and Dane Gillespie, both members of the local chapter, helped plan and facilitate the event. Earley is serving as the Region VIII president and Gillespie is serving as the Region VIII assistant officer.
