The Minnesota Twins Community Fund announced that the Diamonds and Dreams Scholarship Program granted $2,000 scholarships to 20 Upper Midwest youth in pursuit of post-secondary education.

Girls add 11 wins, take tourney title
The Spring Grove girls (19-1), after sweeping two summer basketball league games at La Crosse on July 13, went to Waverly, Iowa on July 16 and 17 for the Wartburg College Shootout where they won the overall tournament championship among approximately 36 varsity teams, all from Iowa except for SG and Albert Lea.

Lions log league shutouts of Mabel, Hokah
Keenan Siminski pitched a no-hit shutout of Mabel and later in the week had the big bases-clearing hit while Harrison Speltz tossed a one-hit whitewashing of Hokah as the Spring Grove Little Leaguers remained undefeated (5-0) in league play heading into the final week of the regular season.

Meyer, Goetzinger, Anderson are All-SEC
Three Spring Grove/Caledonia girls with gloves were named by Southeast Conference coaches to the 2010 All-SEC softball team. Aly Meyer has been so honored for the third time while Katie Goetzinger is all-league for the second season. Jacey Anderson is the other first team selection while Taylor Elton received honorable mention.

Five named all-conference baseball
With selection to the 2010 All-Three Rivers Conference Baseball Team, Dakotah Rostad is thought to be the only Spring Grove athlete to be all-conference five times in a single sport. He is one of five Caledonia/Spring Grove players on this year's honor team - joined by seniors Bobby Augedahl, Trent Meyer and Mike Ideker along with junior Ivan Augedahl.

Boys suffer first loss, finish second at tourney
The Spring Grove varsity girls improved to 4-0 by obliterating two normally formidable foes in summer league basketball on June 22. The boys (7-1) also coasted in league play and then on June 26 cashed in two more wins before suffering their first loss in the finals of an eight-team Winona Cotter Tournament played at St. Mary's.

JV girls win Cotter Tourney Sixth grade boys play at state
While the varsity boys and girls were sweeping mid-week league games, the B-Team girls won a June 19 tournament at Winona Cotter. The sixth grade boys played in two state-level Pacesetter Tournaments at St. Cloud. The boys were second in a June 19 tourney for regional runners-up and then placed seventh in the June 20 championship tournament for regional champions.

Mullins 23rd at state
Molly Mullins finished in a tie for 23rd place among 87 girls at the June 16 and 17 Class AA State Golf Tournament. It was her second trip to state after a 31st-place tie in 2009.

Goetzinger voted softball MVP
Katie Goetzinger was voted Most Valuable Player by her Spring Grove/Caledonia softball teammates. The junior catcher was a double honoree also being voted the Team Player Award.

Baseball boys post impressive numbers
The Caledonia/Spring Grove baseball team does not recognize any individuals with team awards. In 2010, Dakotah Rostad was at the top of six of the 10 statistical categories listed here. He had a team-high batting average of .488 and was the most difficult player for opposing pitchers to strike out, fanning only once in 80 official trips to the plate.

Connelly is a Rough Rider
Chris Connelly, SG Class of 2008 is currently playing semi-pro football in La Crosse for the River City Rough Riders. The 5-9, 185-pound Lion alum was the starting punt returner and reserve wide receiver/running back as the team opened the season with a 12-0 win over the Bridge City Knights (Ottumwa, IA).

Thinclads experience a record, a spill, many medals at state
Seven athletes competed in six events and earned medals in four events for Caledonia/Spring Grove last weekend (June 11 and 12) at the Class A State Track and Field Championships at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Boys became contenders in 2010
It was a significant improvement for all involved with Caledonia coming off a 12-11 season and a few Spring Grove guys with gloves after a 4-12 campaign. The two schools came together for the first time with the same baseball jerseys to post a 17-5 season that was in contention for the Three Rivers Conference championship until the final few days.

Softball rebuilds with no surprises
There were no real surprises as Spring Grove/Caledonia moved through a rebuilding softball season. Neither the girls nor their opponents were able to pull off any upsets. They went 2-2 in the few toss-up games.

The summer cage season began for the Spring Grove varsity boys who swept all three games and the championship of the June 13 Glenville-Emmons Tournament. In La Crosse at Viterbo, the B-Team girls split two games as they opened summer league play.
